Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) accumulation in Quercus palustris and Pinus nigra in the urban landscape of Gothenburg, Sweden

چکیده

Trees have the potential to improve urban air quality as leaves and needles capture pollutants from air, but further empirical data has been requested quantify these effects. We measured concentration of 32 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in pin oak (Quercus palustris) black pine (Pinus nigra) City Gothenburg, Sweden, during summer 2018. Oak were collected twice (June, September), while one-year-old (C + 1) three-year-old 3) sampled June study temporal development leaf/needle PAH concentrations. Specific leaf area (SLA) was estimated, which permitted calculation area-based content that compared with mass-based concentration. In addition, PAHs NO2 using passive samplers. There a strong correlation between concentrations NO2, indicating large degree originate same sources. there significant decrease low molecular mass (L-PAH, mainly gaseous) September, increase high (H-PAH, particle-bound). L-PAH an influence equilibrium processes ambient leaf. needles, both H-PAH needles. Pine superior accumulating especially for L-PAHs when comparing content. However, higher on basis, emphasizing importance how are expressed. The results this can contribute planning strategies regarding effect vegetation quality.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) occurrence and remediation methods

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are potentially mutagenic and carcinogenic substances occurring at various concentrations in atmosphere, soils, waters and sediments. PAHs, inherited both from natural and anthropogenic processes, are persistent organic pollutants (POP) due to their chemical stability and biodegradation resistance. The increase of road transportation, and of industrial an...

Ecotoxicity of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated soil.

Soil samples from a former cokery site polluted with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were assessed for their toxicity to terrestrial and aquatic organisms and for their mutagenicity. The total concentration of the 16 PAHs listed as priority pollutants by the US Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA) was 2634+/-241 mg/kgdw in soil samples. The toxicity of water-extractable pollutants f...

Isolation of adherent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-degrading bacteria using PAH-sorbing carriers.

Two different procedures were compared to isolate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-utilizing bacteria from PAH-contaminated soil and sludge samples, i.e., (i) shaken enrichment cultures in liquid mineral medium in which PAHs were supplied as crystals and (ii) a new method in which PAH degraders were enriched on and recovered from hydrophobic membranes containing sorbed PAHs. Both technique...
